Finding Joy in Simplicity

It is so so easy to go throughout your day, not finding joy or being happy about anything. It has almost become normal for us to worry or stress about things than to simply be happy. We tend to think its easier to focus on the negative parts of our day, when in reality there is a lot more good surrounding us than we realize.

The reason it can be so difficult to find things in our day that truly make us happy is because we tend to base our happiness on our circumstances. We forgot that our joy and happiness actually comes from the goodness and love of God. James 1:17 (NIV) says,

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

Instead of trying to dig for false hope and happiness in our circumstances, open your eyes to see the blessings God has put right in front of you.

By relying solely on our circumstances and the world for our happiness, we will get no where. This only leads us down a path of worry, anxiety, and loneliness. The crazy thing is, when we focus our eyes on the Lord we naturally find so much more joy. It's not necessarily that the bad situations in life go away, but because our attention is on God we are able to clearly see His constant blessings in our life.

When Peter walked on water, his eyes and all of his attention were on Jesus. The storm still surrounded him, but because he was completely focused on Jesus he simply forgot about the storm.

Take a second, and look around at the things in your life. Yes, there will always be hard things in our lives, but that does't mean we can't find joy. Focus your attention on Jesus, and you will find that it will become a lot easier to focus on joy. If it still seems like you can't find anything to be joyful about, remember that there are over 5,000 of God's promises in the Bible. Those are 5,000 things that God has promised us and we can find joy in (not including the new blessings God is constantly giving us).

Things to Find Joy In:

  • You woke up in the morning

  • There is a sunset/sunrise every single day

  • Dogs exist haha

  • The people in your life

  • The fact that Jesus literally died for our sins, just so He could be with us

Finding joy isn't just in the big things, its also in the little things. When we begin to notice God's fingerprints and constant blessings, we can find joy throughout our day because our eyes are set on Him.

Psalm 94:19 (NIV)

"When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."
